London accommodation

Types of London accommodation explained

In 2000, there were well over 100,000 hotel rooms in London. Since winning the Olympic bid, developers have gone mad building even more hotels in both the luxury and budget markets. It’s expected that by mid-2012 there will be over 123,000 hotel rooms in the capital.

There are several different types of accommodation in London, from the luxury hotel, through to the budget hostel with everything in between. However, most of the luxury 4- and 5-star hotels are clustered in just one area: Mayfair.

Mayfair has long been the upscale corner of London. Many of its prestigious hotels date back over 100 years. Some of the most famous include The Dorchester, Claridges and The Ritz. However, there are dozens more. One of the most attractive Mayfair hotels is from Millennium Hotels. Located on Grosvenor Square, perhaps the most exclusive Mayfair location, The Millennium Hotel Mayfair is housed in a stunning, neo-Georgian mansion, complete with regal-looking pillars and large sash windows. The newest Mayfair hotel is 45 Park Lane, the sister hotel to The Dorchester, opened in September 2011.

If you don’t want to go for a flashy name or bags of space, there are numerous boutique hotels in the capital that offer something truly unique. A personalised service, individually designed rooms and trendy, urban locations add a new dimension to your London city break. For example, the Zetter and the Charlotte Street Hotel are slick, stylish and arty and offer heaps of style and character. Both hotels have less than 50 rooms and each is distinctive.

But hotels aren’t your only option, and by no means do you need to stick to the luxury market. A great way of stretching your money further, particularly if you are travelling in a group, as a family or staying in the capital for more than just a few days, is to rent an apartment or apart-hotel. Not only will you get to see new areas, but you’ll be able to chill out on the sofa, cook food from the supermarket and generally make your stay stress-free and affordable. Most apart-hotels have free Wi-Fi internet access and laundry services.

Whatever sort of accommodation you are looking for and whatever budgetary requirements you need to meet, London has an accommodation option for you.
